The concept of hegemonic masculinity is widely employed by scholars worldwide in the analysis of unequal relationships between men and women, between masculinity and femininity, and among men and masculinities. Since Raewyn Connell’s initial conception of the term, it has been the driving force behind the expanding field of critical masculinities studies and has led gender scholars to concentrate their research on understanding the construction of hegemonic and non-hegemonic masculinities in many different fields, including criminology. Although boys and men dominate all categories of crime, the major theories within criminology continue to be alarmingly gender blind. And this is the case even though since 1993, scholars have researched how the social construction of hegemonic and non-hegemonic masculinities are related to crime. Indeed, the purpose of this Special Issue is to provide a venue for the publication of new, cutting-edge, scholarship on the relationship between masculinities and crime.
